Sooo excited for this weekend: Palm Sunday AND Purim

How exciting that this weekend, Jews will celebrate Purim and Christians will celebrate Palm Sunday. Both holidays remember a prayer-full, powerful leader and their efforts to save their people, to usher in a new kin-dom where all people were safe and recognized.

Purim recounts the story of an orphaned-girl, Hadassah, who rises to become Queen Esther and thwarts a plot to kill all Jews. Her story is told in the book of Esther in the Hebrew Scriptures, Christian Old Testament. It’s a short powerful story.

There’s a very fun summary of it in a video I'm sharing at the end of this post but don't miss the brief history of Palm Sunday below.

Palm Sunday recounts the story of a man, Jesus of Nazareth, born to an unwed mom who rises to become a prophet, miracle-worker, teacher and Messiah – anointed one – who Christians believe was God-personified. His stories are recounted in the four gospels in the Christian New Testament. On Palm Sunday, Christians remember Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem for the Passover and how people processed with Him, in solidarity.

Queen Esther has been a role model for Rev. AndreaGrace and was referenced in her ordination homily which you can watch below.

The stories are tied together in a beautiful song, Rise Up, that asks us to continue the work of these change-leaders.
